Based\nin Saint Louis this museum, also known as the &lsquo;Maison Rouge&rsquo; (Red House),\nshowcases the last coffee estate of the eighteenth century on R\u00e9union island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first\npart of the day we were given a guided tour of the exterior of the estate. Our\nguide explained how the daily running of the coffee business happened &#8211; the\norganisation, the agriculture, and how it developed over time under different owners.\nWe were also given an interesting explanation of the history of some well-known\nR\u00e9union family names and their links to the use of slaves on the estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the afternoon\nwe were able to visit the museum situated inside the property. Here we saw many\nobjects significant to the patrimony of the estate and the exchanges that\noccurred between the East and the West. These items &#8211; made from wood, ceramics,\nmetal or glass &#8211; are examples of traditional artworks and illustrate the\ndiffusion of cultures in the Indian ocean during this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found the visit to be extremely interesting and our guide was very interactive and knowledgeable. It was fascinating to hear how things have changed since the original coffee estate but also to make the links between this rich history and what we see around us today. This was interesting and we learned a lot\nof things&nbsp;even if it was a little hot but I didn&rsquo;t like the objects in the\nmuseum. I liked listening to the story of the house because it was really\ninteresting.
