A DAY AT MADOI

On Thursday 7th March we visited MADOI (‘Musée des Arts Décoratifs de l’Océan Indien’). Based in Saint Louis this museum, also known as the ‘Maison Rouge’ (Red House), showcases the last coffee estate of the eighteenth century on Réunion island.

For the first part of the day we were given a guided tour of the exterior of the estate. Our guide explained how the daily running of the coffee business happened – the organisation, the agriculture, and how it developed over time under different owners. We were also given an interesting explanation of the history of some well-known Réunion family names and their links to the use of slaves on the estate.

In the afternoon we were able to visit the museum situated inside the property. Here we saw many objects significant to the patrimony of the estate and the exchanges that occurred between the East and the West. These items – made from wood, ceramics, metal or glass – are examples of traditional artworks and illustrate the diffusion of cultures in the Indian ocean during this period.

I found the visit to be extremely interesting and our guide was very interactive and knowledgeable. It was fascinating to hear how things have changed since the original coffee estate but also to make the links between this rich history and what we see around us today. I would definitely recommend a visit to this museum.

“I liked the outing because I learned more about my culture. I really liked to go around the place because we were outside and the guide explained very well.”

“At the museum, I liked when the man told the history of Reunion Island. This was interesting and we learned a lot of things even if it was a little hot but I didn’t like the objects in the museum. I liked listening to the story of the house because it was really interesting. The time to eat was great.”                 LANGLADE Rachelle 4°A

The guide told us about the history of the coffee plantations.
It was very interesting.

Slaves worked right here on the plantations.

About the history of « Maison Rouge «, in the background.

Break lunch in the park.
It was mild and resting.

In the afternoon, we visited the Museum ( neoclassicism ).
Taking pictures was not allowed but it was an amazing day.
