The « English, Live ! » pupils were out on a responsible field trip, in Etang-Salé.
They got involved in the beach plantation program led by the CEDTM – the Marine Turtles Discovery and Study Center (a Kélonia partner).
This program aims at recreating a natural environment that favours the return of turtles during the egg-laying season, particularly the green turtle, on our beaches.
We learnt about the various species of turtles and their life cycle, we recalled various plant propagation methods, like layering or taking cuttings. We also talked about the different types of plants that are suitable for each part of a natural beach according to their role : guiding the turtles, protecting them from noise and light, or from high temperatures.
Then we planted about fifty seedings of « papate cochon ».
We ended with a quiz and some pupils were really good and quick-witted : the camp leader was impressed !
We even got a diploma !
